Some recent software we have used

• Internet Explorer 7 (Beta 2)
  A member has reported this difficulty in the use of IE7 Beta2. (Note that he successfully used Windows XP Restore Point to resolve most of the problem.)
   
  "I have Windows XP Home version and pay Xtra/Telecom for the McAfee Security Suite that they offer. One part of that Suite is McAfee Privacy Service whereby, amongst other things, access to the Internet on  my computer is password protected.
  Following the suggestion in your report in the June Newsletter I got on to the Site you quoted and downloaded  IE7. After a few days of using it I decided I didn't like it & preferred IE6.I found I could not uninstall it in the usual way so I had to resort to System Restore going back to a restore point just before IE7's installation date. That did work but it corrupted McAfee Privacy. Whenever I started the computer up McAfee Privacy would pop up seeking my password. Whenever I entered the correct password it denied me access even when I clicked on to "forgotten password" & answered the key question it only confirmed I was using the correct password. I spent a long time on the phone to McAfee who helped me to remove the Privacy Service which I wont bother to reinstall."

• Adobe Reader

This software enables you to read (but not create or edit) PDF documents. These are recognised by the extension .pdf after the file name. One example is our newsletter on the newsletter link on this site. Your computer may have come with Adobe reader already installed. If so check that it is up-to-date. You can get Adobe Reader version 7 for free at Adobe.com but see our pre-recoded CR-ROM below

• Powerpoint Reader

  This software enables you to read (but not create or edit) PowerPoint documents. These are recognised by the extension .ppt or .pps after the file name. Examples where PowerPoint is used are the presentation often made at our monthly meetings. PowerPoint Reader is released free by Microsoft at www.microsoft.com   but see our pre-recoded CR-ROM below

• PIXresizer

This software enables you to change the file size and display size of photos you may wish to attach to an Email in order that they take less time to up load or down load on the internet and also open in a more convenient size for screen viewing. This software is available free at bluefive.pair.com but see our pre-recoded CR-ROM below

• Picasa2

This software enables you to load, manage, manipulate,print, Email and archive digital images. It is one of the basic imaging applications covered in our Digital Imaging Course. Picasa2 is distributed free by Google and is available at picasa.google.com   but see our pre-recoded CR-ROM below

• CD-ROM. SeniorNet Pakuranga has a number of CD-ROMs with all the above software  captured to save you download time if you have a dial- up connection. Please collect your loan copy from the desk at our next monthly meeting, share it with you friends, but get it back to the next meeting so we can issue it to others. • ChatBar Short Message Service to and from a Mobile Phone

 This is 2-Way Mobile Text Messaging to and from your computer made easy.  You do not need to have a mobile phone number- this is a significant saving compared with some other solutions being promoted

The Hong Kong Company  Forgetmenot Software Ltd supplies the software and the messaging service. It is independent of a mobile phone company and therefore you cannot participate in the free or 500 for $10 text messaging promotions in NZ.

In NZ the cost is approximately 18cents per single screen text message (up to160 characters). Longer messages of up to 465 characters can be sent from your PC and they will be segmented into two or  three  text transactions. The 18c fee applies to each. The receiver will get two or  three messages to read.

The receiver replies to your PC using the mobile phone text reply function.
